A small task that started as a small interest to help ophthalmologists find the best tools for doing missions has grown into a full grown project of building mobile microscopes. Since 2015, Dr. Pletcher has teamed up with long term missionary to Africa, Sam Powdrill, to create eyeMobil Innovations. Initially they begin to prototype a small microscope to fit into a suitcase to ease travel for those working internationally doing cataract surgery. This microscope weighs just 27 pounds compared with the normal weight of nearly 300+ pounds.
Since beginning, microscopes have been sent for cataract surgery in some of the following locations: Ethiopia, Ghana, Burundi, Kenya, Liberia, Burma, Ecuador, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Honduras.
In 2018, Dr. Pletcher is excited to help launch a brand new improved version of this microscope in December. Several are already slated for delivery to Sudan, Rwanda and South Korea.
